Character Design & Dialogue – Elder Beggar

Brief

Elder Beggar is an NPC I created as an ongoing part of my work with Beyond Skyrim’s Arcane University. I took on a more in-depth assignment to design a more complex and interesting NPC for the game writing team to review and provide feedback on. For NPC design, writers are given a specific template to work with. This includes notes on character appearance, voice and daily routines. I also provided a brief outline of the character’s main location and residence, to help inform and provide any prompts for the level design team.

I set myself the task of creating a more detailed character who would fit into the existing Skyrim universe. Having created a few NPCs for previous mod projects, I wanted to develop a character with more depth and history, whilst providing varied and meaningful conversation options for the player. After settling on the concept of an elderly wanderer with a secret, I designed Elder Beggar and wrote a compact yet interesting set of dialogue interactions for him.

The documentation here follows the Beyond Skyrim and Arcane University unified style guide. As such, all text is in American English and the Oxford comma is used. Notes for voice actors are highlighted in orange, and implementation notes are highlighted in purple.
